legalizing prostitution

By Puspa

Few days ago I became one of adjudicator-staffs of UNS Internal English Debate 2009. Me and Sonny also one of my lecturer decided some motions. There we picked some interesting issues –though a little bit old fashioned ones- to be debated. What impressed me was Sonny’s motion:

THBT Sex Sells, so Why Not Sell Sex.

That was the Grand Final motion. And I kept thinking of it even after the tournament was over. What impressed me was the way all debaters try to drive this motion into an interesting issue. It leas to the question whether or not we should legalize prostitution.

Some people will question the validity of this assertion. Why would we have to legalize prostitution, anyway?

To my understanding, legalize does not mean permitting everything without any specific rules. Legalize means to put everything in order. To make everything is in balance. People’s justification of legalizing prostitution will say that supply and demand endorse Government to legalize prostitution. Since prostitution has already existed in society, and yes there are chain of supply and demand, so why not legalizing prostitution?

The debate usually goes as follows:

Supply: the existence of prostitutes which take prostitution as their job. They need money and having no skills. Thus they sell their bodies in order to fulfill the biological needs of people who use prostitution-services (D’oh!).

Demand: the demand ofpeople in fulfilling their biological needs. In fulfilling this demand, people have some choices: they can legalize their sexual desires by getting married, cheating over their girlfriends, or they choose to pay prostitutes. This need cannot be neglected, for it’s their personal rights. Thus they need should be accomodated by the existence of prostitutes/ localizations. By having these localizations, government protect the needs of the people who use, the job of prostitues, and yes those who feel irritated by the existence of this prostitution area.

And to negate this debate, debaters might think in a status quo condition where prostitution areas might exist from the very beginning but it does not mean that we need to legalize it. There is no such urgencies of legalizing prostitution, anyway. The fear of misuse of the regulations however exist and people might mis-translated the regulations as permission.

Since there is no urgent reason of legalizing prostitution, why would we have to legalize it?

End of writing. Bu Rini is waiting for me. Have to submit my thesis proposal

So, stop perzinaan dan prostitusi. Perangi AIDS dengan hubungan yang sehat dan halal!
